(Female)Best advice for 1st Trade-in/Purchase on Good Used SUV? General Questions/Need Advice

Hi there! I am recently coming out of a 25 year marriage with a man who was pretty mechanically inclined and did all of our repairs and research when buying different cars. I currently drive a Hummer H3 but have had to replace the radiator, thermostat, O2 sensors. Now my catalytic converter is making a lot noise when starting it up or when the vehicle is cold and I am pretty sure there is something inside it since nothing is loose. Then after a big rain my inside carpets are wet and have tried to get it fixed multiple times but I don’t have any more money to put in it. My first question is should I try to sell it on my own and or take it to a dealership? How do I know if I am getting the right amount for my vehicle? Can you give me a few ideas of to look for? I am partial to SUV but What do you think about a mini? I just really have no idea what to do at this point and I’m scared to be alone when looking and test driving so what can I do? Also I cant afford a payment so it has to be something used. What kind of miles are okay when buying used vehicles? I have so many questions Thank you for your advice Answer to: Car recommendation

Okay so a dealership will always try to lowball your trade in. It has become a bit better these days because dealerships need cars, but still they do lowball it. Appraise it at Carmax, Vroom, Carvana, and see what their offers are so you have something to compare it to. I'm not sure you would want to go through the process of selling it yourself so first see what offers you get for it through the places I mentioned and then decide.

What do you think about a mini?

By mini are you talking about a Mini Cooper? If that's what you mean then definitely no don't consider it.

What kind of miles are okay when buying used vehicles?

It depends on the car. If you're a single person then probably a sedan will work well. Used car prices are high currently so expect higher prices than before. I want to suggest Civic or Corolla. I'll include a link to a video from Scotty on years to buy and/or avoid.

Gain as much knowledge as you can about cars and the car buying process as you can. Any car you decide on have a trusted independent mechanic check it for you and if the seller doesn't agree with an inspection then they know there's something wrong with it. Usually you can get more for your money if you buy private party but still prices will be higher than before.

Hope this helps a bit!

I have so many questions

Have a browse through this - https://carkiller.com/scottykilmer/qa/used/

If you prefer a crossover, your best bet is to stick to a used RAV4/CR-V.

If you want a proper SUV, look at Toyota 4Runners.

If your requirements are fulfilled by a sedan, look no further than a Camry/Accord.

All the best and remember, no matter what you end up buying, BE SURE to have the vehicle thoroughly inspected by professional mechanic, before purchase.
