First Car

Scotty, is a 2008 Mercedes-Benz SLK-280 a good first car? I was going back and forth between the SLK-280 and the SLK-350. Is there much of a difference in insurance price? I also considered a 2007 Porsche Cayman, but I am also concerned about the cost of insurance on that. I am a sixteen-year-old male so I guess insurance will probably be expensive no matter what. What are your thoughts? Thanks

Depends on your age.  Your insurance costs might be as expensive as maintenance for either vehicle.  I also think those Mercedes were prone to wiring harness issues. If you are deciding between a used Mercedes and a Porsche, I think it would be cheaper to burn your money in a barrel and get a Corolla.

Get what you want, but your total cost of ownership as a first car will be high with these vehicles.  Hope you have a good income stream!

Insurance on the Mercedes may be a bit cheaper than the Porsche as insurance companies probably associate Porsches more with speeding ticets, etc and probably a bit more to repair if it gets damaged.

Your insurance is going to be more dependent on your age and driving record and insurance coverage (deductibles).

If your dad can pay for the insurance and repair costs, either of those choices should be ok.

But, if you plan to be independent, get a corolla or civic or camry. When you get older, you realized how much money you can save if you buy Japanese.

Good luck!
