For those thinking about an engine rebuild. Consider

So you have a car you like. It’s 18 years old, still in good shape. Has over 250k miles and the motor is about dead. So you decide to rebuild yours or put in a remanned engine.

It has been my experience on automatic transmissions, and on some manuals that this may not always be a good decision. Keep in mind as your original engine gained miles and wear over time it’s power and torque declined somewhat. Also as mileage increased you may have found yourself being more conservative in accelerating and taking turns etc somewhat slower.

Now you have a new engine in the same car. With the response and power it had when it was new. But the body mounts, some suspension parts, transmission and possibly rear differential if it’s rear wheel drive have 250k of wear. If it’s something like a Camry and you are  a conservative driver no problem. But if its a sports coupe and you like the return of power, or maybe pass the car along to your kids, there is a very good chance other parts of the drivetrain may not survive the returned power and torque.

Scotty, this is what I have noticed myself in my experience tinkering on mine, my family’s and my friends cars. You have much more experience than myself though. Would you agree with this?

I think you made a valid point.

I have never rebuilt an engine but agree with other parts. Thanks for sharing your experience.

These are all things I tell people when they come in to have a motor rebuilt or new engine installed. You almost always have to change out other parts as well or they will break in the near future.

Last time I dealt with a rebuilt engine was quite some time ago but I also had the transmission overhauled at the same time. (It was a 1967 Rambler.)
