I recently bought a 1979 Ford f-250 Ranger Lariat. it has 256,000 + miles on it. its 2 wheel drive. its got a leak in the left valve cover. it also has a starter problem. i have a new starter, but im not sure what the easiest way to get to it is. what are your thoughts on it?

Lie on your back. Unbolt the old one, bolt in the new one. Tah Dah!

Well I'll be dipped! Guy just gotta just chuck out the old one and put in the new. 3-5 bolts but be sure to take out the battery, you don't want to spark and fry things.
Just disconnect the negative terminal connection and then get after it.
