Ford ranger won’t run

I have a 1987 ford ranger 2.3L i4 automatic. odometer discrepancy.
I bought this not running from a kid that didn’t know what to do with it. It will crank but not start. It will pop off in a rhythmic way as if just one cylinder is firing. It has spark. And there is fuel on the spark plugs (a lot of it). It previously ran on starting fluid and sounded really good. Any vehicle with a computer and sensors confuses me. Plugs are new, wires are new, fuel has been replaced and circulated. Anyone have any ideas?

Well they sit that long since of that spark. I would assume it's got problems with the fuel injection system. Full of crud old fuel, All kinds of problems going to happen. Start by trying to figure if the fuel injection system is working right

I’m going to try to pull the injectors out and clean them. I’m thinking they’re dumping too much fuel in the cylinders. I also noticed a lot of fuel in the oil. I’m hoping the rings will come around after some running.
