Scotty, my 2006 Ford 500 3.0 V-6? Asin 6 speed, fwd, 175,000 miles is leaking oil around the valve covers. How big a job is this? Thank you.
It depends on how good of a DIYer you are. You absolutely need a torque wrench for this kind of thing. Usually, there's a specific sequence for torquing the bolts down that you need to abide by, or you could experience leaks with the new gasket.
With my old Ranger, which was a equipped with an old 3.0 Vulcan V6, the valve covers were both leaking. There was a plenum gasket in between the upper and lower parts of the intake manifold that also needed replacing if I replaced the valve cover gaskets. I didn't feel like replacing both valve cover gaskets and a plenum gasket in frigid weather last year, so I took my Ranger to a shop.
