Hello Scotty -
I have 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with about 84000 miles on it and I had replaced the brakes with new rotors and new pads (ceramic) about 1 year ago. I have braking issue that began last summer which it feels like warped rotors (it felt fine at cold start/run, and it becomes noticeable more and more when rotors are warmed up). Front rotors looks good but has sort of purplish color in middle of pad area around the rotors. No codes or whatsoever. Wondering if the ceramic pads are the main problem for causing the rotors to be warped when hot, and should I replace them with semi-metallic pads and new rotors, instead of ceramic pads??? What/where else should I check for possible cause??
Thanks,
Rick
Do you have photos of this discolouration?
I hope someone can comment about the discoloration, you made me curious.
As far as the rotor warping, that is more likely due to the quality of the rotor than the pad material. Could also be due to improper break in, but more likely just a manufacturing defect in the rotors.
What brand and model rotors did you put on? Did you contact the seller or manufacturer?
I had put Carquest Platinum painted rotors on with carquest professional platinum pads (ceramic) ...will go to that advanced part store later today and see when I had bought them and go from there if they are under 2 years (as those rotors have 2 years warranty....)
What are "painted rotors?" and did they come with a warranty? Was the protective coating on the rotors cleaned off with a solvent cleaner before being put into use?
the hub part of the rotor is painted with rust protection(and yes, as per advanced auto parts website, those rotors have 2 years warranty for defective)...and yes, I have cleaned them off with brake cleaner prior to brake pads being installed.
did you use an impact gun to tighten the wheels after you did the brake job?
No, I used the torque wrench to tighten to specs.
As I decided to look up my order history....yeah, just bought the rotors and pads last June.
UPDATE:
I went to Advanced Auto store where I bought the pads and rotors and asked questions, etc...turned out that I had 3 months left of the warranty on them (as per record, bought them in June of 2020), so I had to buy new rotors and pads in order for me to take them home and replaced the rotors and pads on my Grand Cherokee, and bring back the old ones and get money back fully. Yeah the prices for the parts had gone up significantly!! So I am good for another 2 years of warranty. 👍
What brand did you buy this time?
