Hi Scotty and friends my mothers 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe for a while now she says when she gets gas the gauge only goes to 3/4 of the way and not up to full I tried doing it myself today for her kept trying to keep going with the gas pump until the reservoir was going to overflow but again it wasn’t full on the gauge. So I take it that it’s got a problem fuel related but I think the only time it would be the fuel pump is if it wouldn’t start. what could the problem be and is it worth fixing on a Hyundai this old? It only has 85,000 miles.
It's the fuel level sensor in the tank. You actually have two: a main and an auxiliary.
TBH, I don’t think it is worth it to fix the gauge. If it was something hindering the performance of the car, then yes fix it.
I recommend filling up the tank to the max. Then using the mileage trip tracker to see how many miles you can go on the tank before it reaches empty.
Make note of the total trip mileage. And use it as a an estimate of how much gas you have in the car.
yes Kaizen I was just looking to see what the problem is I also do not think it’s worth it either to fix. my mother will just let it go to half and fill from there again and again. she never lets it go less than that but it lasts her a week she doesn’t drive it as much as she used to because shes retired and now we have been living in a pandemic for a year now. It’s definitely not worth fixing car is great otherwise.
The fuel level sender (which is like a light dimmer switch) connected to the fuel pump is in the tank and needs replacing. $$$$$$$$$$$$$
So if it is in the tank that means it’s a very big job You have to take the whole gas tank off the even get to that part, and taking it to a mechanic will be a lot of money for parts and labor for an issue that’s only causing the gauge to be a little off from full
