Can a bad gas cap throw a service engine soon message?

How can you tell if its bad?

Type of vehicle, age, mileage?

It can cause a small evap leak code which may well trigger the check engine light. Gas caps are cheap, if it's old just replace it. On the other hand if you have a separate "service engine soon" indicator that might well be turned on by mileage.

My speedometer just turned 220,000 miles and the "sensor" light came on.  It's hooked to the odometer and comes on every 30,000 miles.  I just shut it off.  Why would you suspect the gas cap being bad if you don't have any codes to analyze yet?  A gas cap and a pcv valve are two of the cheapest replacement parts available.  How old are yours?

if its original to the car, a 95 Silhoette. 27 years old. bought a new one

Need a OBD 1 to scan for code,

Everything in the engines works fine,

On my 2005 Camry - I had this happen twice (during the lifetime of the car)! Check engine light came on, the dealer charged me for "reading the code," a bunch of other stuff and the resolution was a new $10 gas cap.

I moved your answer to the correct section in this thread. Make sure all answers are entered in the “Your Answer” section. Thanks.
