Gasket Removal

Topic starter

I am putting on a rebuilt head and need to clean the deck of the cast iron block.  The head gasket residue is stuck on like toilet paper to Crazy Glue.  I don't want to use any abrasives on power tools, just by hand.  Any tips or tricks?  Thanks

Use can use a plastic scraper to remove the debris. Plastic won't scratch the surface.

Is the engine in or outside of the vehicle?

Cast iron is really tough, unlike aluminum, so it's difficult to damage. I wouldn't hesitate with power tools and mild abrasives. But if you want to do it by hand then just use a regular old gasket scraper tool and acetone.

Make sure the heads are not warped.

Thanks, Joe. I even tried Permatex gasket remover but still have residue. Engine is in vehicle. I'll try the acetone.
