Has Scotty spoken about how he and his wife liked driving the Matrix on such a long trip...if he'd take it again, or take the Lexus the next time? I recall he's always said for trips over 60 miles he would normally take the Lexus because it's more comfortable.
Thinking of taking a long trip in my Vibe, instead of my Accord...
He took the Matrix because it has better fuel economy. The Matrix made it there.
Scotty discussed this in two videos. In the first, he said he took the Matrix for two reasons 1. The wife won't allow packing tools in the trunk of the Lexus (her car) and 2. MPG difference. Given the 14 mpg difference, Scotty said, given the miles, and the cost of gas, he'd be looking at a considerably higher fuel cost.
The second video was from upstate NY. He was happy with the Matrix's performance.

If he had problems, I'm positive they would have been mentioned in a video as soon as he got where he was going. They are reliable cars and as others have said, he took it to save on gas. That's a pretty lengthy trip and good MPG would really make a difference.
