Hello i’m looking to buy a car i’m looking at a 1999 honda accord $2000 and a 2001 toyota corolla $1850 private parties both
I'd go with the Honda, but honestly they are both pretty good cars.
1998 - 2002 were bad years for the Corolla though....just about the only timeframe where they had some problems. Based on that, I'd go Accord.
1999 was from an era of particularly bad automatic transmissions.
Thank you @billybob. I couldn't remember what the problem was.
It was the Accord that had the bad automatic transmissions.

Both are two well made vehicles, if you dont care about much comfort and luxury, and just commute to work it's a good choice, but remember is a 20 years old vehicles, you should inspect first if there isn't any problem with the car before you buy it always, if they are okay buy it, those vehicles will last forever.
My preference is the accord btw 🙂 even is two years older, honda never let me down.
How much mileage on them?
the accord has 140,000 miles and the corolla has 145,000
Plenty of life on both. I’m still driving my 1999 Accord at 270K miles.
Word of advice. Make sure to check the timing belt on both the Accord and Corolla. (Not sure if Corolla went back to chains yet at that time.)
It’s a maintenance item that often gets neglected. TBH. They seem to last long beyond the maintenance interval. But always good to inspect it now and then.
My vote would be Accord. It’s one of my favorite generations of Accords.
I'd go Accord. If the Camry was on there, I would have picked that, but both are good cars but the Corolla had more issues than the Accord in those years.
I have a 99 Accord with 279 k. A few things to check. Oil leaks from the valve cover gasket. Easy to replace, a decent set even comes with spark plug tube and bolt seals. Also the o-ring where the distributor bolts on. And very importantly the gasket on the back of the block where the variable vale timing controller bolts to the block. That gasket gets hard as a rock due to heat and will leak. That last one is a pain, and may be easier to take off the EGR valve but worth the time. Good luck.
For the hard one, do you mean the VTEC solenoid, or are you referring to something else.
YEs sorry the vtec solenoid.
That was one of the best gen for Accords and one of the worst for corollas. I highly recommend the honda accord
That gen of Accord was particularly bad for automatic transmissions.
billybob is correct. I've only seen 1 manual transmission vehicle in a while and that was that generation of Honda Accord. If you check on craigslist there is a high rate of manuals on the Accord/Civics because the autos were weak.
I have to disagree with many people in this. I owned a 1999 honda accord and the car started to fall a part after 199k which is fair. If you want longevity over luxury get the corolla. Some of the issues with the accord: transmission, ignition switch( common problem and very dangerous with the car stalling on the highway), rust problems, oil burning, etc, etc. Very important, the corolla has a TIMING CHAIN, basically maintenance free, change the oil ( this generation of corolla burns oil so keep an eye on that ). My accord had a big folder with maintenance records, so even though every car has an expiration date, the toyotas seem to hold up better with maintenance. I have a corolla with 240k on the odo, and it does not seem to want to die. Hope this helps!
