I have a Nissian Xterra with 75K.
Transmission fluid was last changed at 27K
I checked the condition of the fluid on the stick before I started and it looked fine (clear to pinkish) so I proceeded to drain.
Once drained it looks pretty dark compared to the new.
Should I put the old fluid back in to avoid issues or continue to change with with new?
Thanks in advance.
See pictures below...if I posted these right.
I would put new fluid in. You could save the old fluid in a sealed container for a short while and, if your transmission starts slipping, do another drain and fill and put the old fluid back in.
I would just replace it with new at that mileage. Usually it doesn't get changed until 60k miles. The manual actually recommends 90k miles. So I'd say you are ok.
I would defer to more experienced mechanics, but damn, that's dark fluid for having been changed 50k ago.
Did you do do the ATF change or was it a shop? (I got burned by a shop who said they changed my oil - but didn't, so I recommend checking these things. Another shop left tools under my hood)
You're probably itching to get the vehicle back on the road - maybe split the difference and put in a 50/50 mix of new and old?
It was supposedly change by my local Nissan dealer.
I agree . That is really dark for 50k. Try some synthetic ATF.
we replaced it with Nissian matic S. Think it will be Ok?
Is that what the owner's manual recommends?
Thank you for the link and info. I found the matic s in the xterra manual, but with the old being more brownish than red I'm a bit worried.
It should be good to change. You could save the old fluid to be on the safe side.
It should be fine that’s the fluid for the truck. And it doesn’t show any signs of intermix.
