When was the last time you changed your auto trans fluid and filter?

I got the car 2 years ago and we had other issues with it that we sorted out. I haven't changed it

To clarify - does the engine RPM increase when this happens? If so your transmission is slipping. What does the fluid look like? If instead the engine is rbogging down and dying that suggests a carb problem, vacuum leak, or exhaust restriction.

The car doesn't have a working tachometer and the fluid looks good. The carb was rebuilt recently.

If the engine was revving up and the car not moving you'd probably hear that even without seeing it on a tach.

Is float level OK in the rebuilt carb? Accelerator pump working? (With engine off look down the carb throat and work the throttle, you should see gas spraying.) Reading over your description again, the engine bogging down when hitting the gas pedal and picking up when letting off is the classic symptom of a problem with the accelerator pump. You would also see that symptom if revving it in neutral. Also, does it still have breaker point ignition? Dwell and timing OK?

The accelerator pump is working and it still is running points on the ignition. Dwell I'm not sure and timing is good
