Hey Scotty, I’ve been looking into the Hyundai Equus 5.0 L V8 recently and haven’t seen any for sale with high mileages. How reliable are they and mileage life expectancy?
A V8 in a Hyundai: What could go wrong?

Don't buy one. Run away from it.
The terms "high mileage" and "Hyundai" are a contradiction in terms.
Please search the forum,
The Hyundai Equus V8’s reliability has been discussed, I remember writing a lengthy answer about it.
The TLDR is, it’s a decent toy, but not a car you want to do lots of miles in / to have high mileage on.
The Tau engine isn’t all that bad in the MPi variant, and the transmission is solid ZF, the same unit as an Austin Martin.
But the overall complexity, rarity, high maintenance requirements and MPG make it a questionable daily driver.
It’s just not close to being a Lexus.
Even the ones with the eight speed autos too! Lol, why would Hyundai be that dumb to get rid of the sweetest point that they were at from that point of time to something that would be as garbage as a Daewoo in Gucci clothing?! That's pretty unfair from my point of view. Who knows if it's unfair to someone else that doesn't like Hyundai 🤣
@Deathmetaljunkie
Well realize that similarly to VW, modern Hyundai's US market cars do not have much in common with European/Korean markets offerings - but the Equuas was sold on the US market practically unchanged from it's world version.
-
After doing more research, Hyundai ain't "dumb", that RWD 8 speed is the Mobis version of the ZF 8 speed and that specific version holds up reasonably well.
I just don't see how it is a "Daewoo in Gucci clothing" - it's nice to drive at least.
-
And yet I do NOT recommend buying one cause it's too complex.
-
The funniest thing about Daewoo is that they're the people responsible for designing GM's exteriors or interiors being the 3rd largest GM design facility - so every GM has Daweoo (rebranded as "GM Korea")
Daweoo also builds the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Chevrolet Trax, Buick Encore GX in their Korean factory.
Turns out that if you take a Daewoo lacetti and call it "Chevrolet Cruze" people will flock to buy it and praise it for the "design".
Crap cars,
but as far as plushness, remember that almost every gm has Daeweoo design.
It's a Hyundai. I rest my case.
I'd keep myself away from that particular vehicle. Yeah, it's luxurious and affordable to get simultaneously. But as time goes on, it's not gonna be reliable by any chance and it can be an endless money pit for any repairs that needs to be done on it too. The fact that it has poor quality GDI in it's V8 connected to a pile of junk 8 speed automatic, it wouldn't be worth buying that particular car. The only good year of the Equus is the 2011 model when it had it's old school port injected 4.6L V8 connected to a ZF Transmission at that point of time. But yeah, if I were you, don't buy it!
If it is the MPi version, maybe. If it is the GDI version, no way.
I say maybe*** because this engine had a short and relatively limited lifespan in terms of production. I conjecture that parts will be harder to get, and not too many mechanics will be familiar with a Hyundai V8.
It may be a deal now, but done the ride it may cost an arm and a leg.
