Hey Scotty, I would like to do my own oil and filter changes. Just one problem, how to discard old oil. Will oil change places usually take it?

Most places that sell oil will usually take used oil. (Well, supermarkets might not.) Also municipal garages and recycling centers are usually happy to accept it because they frequently use waste oil powered heaters in winter, so it's free fuel for them.

Then there's the method that Popular Science magazine recommends but I personally would not feel comfortable with doing it that way:

Autozone and others take it freely.

It is illegal to dump used motor oil, or any automobile fluid in the ground, or throw it in the trash.

And yes, the trash companies will happily photograph, collect the evidence, and hand it over to a prosecutor.

Our local company has video cameras running on every truck.

Auto parts stores takes them. Where i live the garbage people take them.

My municipal recycler 1 mile away take it for free. I just drop it off and go.

I wouldn't pour it on the ground but I have no qualms about putting it in a milk jug and putting it in a black trash bag along with other trash.

Just take it to Autozone or O’reilly’s. You shouldn’t be putting in the trash.
