Hi all, I recently bought a Honda City 2009 auto VTec 1.5, when I first bought the car, it made a strange noise every time I changed into 2nd, I change the trans oil and the noise went away, five months later when cruising the revs will drop suddenly and then run fine, twice now when taking of I have reached 80Km and the revs have violently dropped and the car suddenly comes to an almost complete stop and revs out, and then runs fine, this is quiet scarry especially when I have traffic behind me.
I have taken it to a mechanic, and they said they couldn't find any error codes and they didn't know what was wrong with it, they replaced the trans oil filter and said if it happens again bring it back and we will drop the pan and change the shift solenoids.
If this problem showed up in the pre-purchase inspection buying it was not a good idea.
You need a good transmission expert who will look beyond "codes" and actually analyze transmission data to find what the problem is. It sounds like the mechanic you've been going to is using the parts cannon approach rather than bothering to do a proper diagnosis.
Thanks for your reply, Chuck,
Yes, you are right, I took a chance at $600 for the car and it seemed like a win for five months, I have to agree I wasn't too impressed with the so-called recommended mechanic, but they were the only ones that would look at it this time of year, all transmission mechanics are closed until early January,
I was hoping there was someone out there that may have experienced this problem or similar, giving me some confidence that I am heading in the right direction.
@ausman If you're lucky it might be something reasonably repairable like a solenoid problem. However at this point you're not too deep into that thing so it really would be better to get a real diagnosis rather than possibly flushing more money down the drain throwing parts at the problem.
