Whats generally the consensus on fifth Generation Honda Preludes? Are their automatic transmissions weak? Were they known for reliability or otherwise?

Any experience working on them/owning them?

I would go with a manual transmission on those because they were just better. Also, have a mechanic check it out before you buy one.

To my knowledge, I think they were relatively resilient. But that is just from memory and a small sample size of friends that had them.

FWIW, I have a 1999 Honda Accord. They are of the same generation. And they shared many components. Mine is manual transmission, so I can’t really comment on the automatic from first hand experience. It’s still running strong, if that helps at all. Wish I could help with more direct experience! Amazing cars those preludes.

The Honda Accords from the late 90s had major automatic transmission problems. Odds are the Prelude is all ragged out so I'm not sure the transmission will have a good amount of life left. A mechanical inspection is a must.
