Hi

My 2010 Honda Accord Ex in the manual says it takeas ATF-Z1 3 quarts, I called dealership to buy fluid and they say they now use DW-1 fluid. Is what they're saying correct, or do I have to look for the ATF-Z1 fluid online?

Thanks!

Yes, it is. DW-1 is fully compatible with Z-1, so you don’t have to exchange all all the fluid. Just drain - about 3-1/2 quarts will come out, … so just pour same amount to replace it.

@figmund-sreud
the manual says my 5 speed auto has a capacity of 2.6 quarts, what are u reffering to when u say 3.5 qtS?

Actually, your transmission has total capacity of roughly 5 - 6 quarts. Five-point-seven litres, if I remember correctly. However, when you pull a plug on the bottom of a casting, only about 3 - 3-1/2 quarts will come out. I know this from experience. Rest stays inside, … and you can’t drain it, unless you remove transmission and disassemble it.

Anyway, … I say buy 4 quarts to save yourself a possible extra trip to the store if more than 3 quarts drains.
Best,

if i drain and fill with the 4 quarts, should I take MrRangers advice (below) and drain and fill 3-4 times to get old z1 out or is it fine having some residue or some mixed with new dw1? Thanks again

Yes. Three quarts, … three time change is an excellent idea. I would include a bit of driving in between drains and fills. And make sure you are draining when transmission is warm - car driven sufficiently to make it warm.
Also, note how much of the filings your magnetic drain plug collected when you pull it the first time. Clean it well. If upon a second and third drain you notice that the plug is still collecting more filings, … clean those, too.

ATF-Z1 is discontinue. You can only get ATF-DW1, and it compatible with the Z1 you have now.

I would do 2-3 drain and fills with DW1 to get the old fluid old. Z1 wasn't the best fluid, which is why Honda went back to the drawing board.

Make sure you use real Honda tranny fluid.  The Hondas are real finicky regarding tranny fluid.

The authentic stuff costs a little more but transmissions are very expensive to replace its worth the extra cost.
