How to know if car battery is bad and needs a new one?

Load test your battery & alternator. Most car shops will do it for free.
A simple test is if your headlights don’t turn on, or turn on but are weak. Also, sometimes your horn may sound meek.

Check your battery date. go to an Autozone store and ask them to check the battery for you for free.
As Scotty said, the modern cars do not show signs of weak batteries and all of a sudden, the battery won't start the car. It happened to me too.
