How can i figure out why my car is overheating?

I have a 1990 pontiac grand prix v6 3 series. How can i figure out why my car is overheating? Thank you

I would check your coolant level. If you still have the factory radiator, that could be the culprit due to age. 

If that all looks good, check the thermostat to make sure your cooling fans are working as intended.

The 3.1 V6 is notorious for failing intake and head gaskets, sludged up coolant, and cracked engine blocks near the center cylinders.

 

A car like that is basically worth scrap.
