- It has only 127000 miles on it. The subaru dealership is telling me it needs a new transmission. They quoted me at over $9000. I have had well over 30 cars and suvs. I have never seen anything like this before.

Unfortunately the CVT is the weakest part of those cars and it's made worse by Subaru's insisting that they are "sealed" transmissions with "lifetime" fluid. From what I've seen dealers won't consider changing fluid for 100,000 miles or more and by then the damage is done. (Those CVTs would no doubt last a lot longer with regular fluid changes.) As far as I know nobody repairs those things, it's a dealer-only item replaced as a complete factory rebuilt unit.
What are the symptoms? Is it certain the trans is bad? (It's amazing to me that a dealer could tell someone that has a 5-year-old car that it needs a $9000 repair with a straight face.)
