I want to purchase a range rover but which year and model would be the most reliable one to buy?

If you want a nice new, some what sporty luxury SUV to drive around for a few years then sure, they're okay at that. But if you plan on daily driving it for more than a few years absolutely do not get a range rover. You can get a better bang for your buck almost anywhere else.

In the old "TFL scale of buy it-lease it-rent it-or forget it", no Land Rover vehicles are "buy its".

But having said that, I see the appeal.  Some people just like the high-up driving position, and even the skeptics have to admit that the 4-WD systems are pretty good.  And certainly there are places (Africa, Austrailan outback) where people rely on them just fine.

So if you really want one, I would take a different approach.  Find a good local European car mechanic who you can trust.  Ask them for guidance on which models and years are best, and what they have the most experience with.  Then maintain a good relationship with them by loyally bringing your vehicle there for maintenance and repairs.  The idea is that if you know you can get repairs quick and easy by a mechanic you trust, that can take a load off your mind (I took that kind of approach with an old Mercedes mechanic, back in the day, and had a good relationship).

I don't think I've ever seen a Range Rover last 100k miles without major problems. Unless you have thousands of dollars, do not purchase one.

There is an old saying, if you want to go into the outback, you drive a Land Rover. If you want to come back, Drive a Land Cruiser.

I have seen tests comparing the four wheel drive system of a...Land rover or range rover with like 300 miles on it, and other 4x4 vehicles. The Rover actually threw codes trying to go up a not so steep hill. The ones running the test where surprised that the thing had issues so soon.

The older ones, many decades ago were solid. I would rather have my old 2008 GX470 that is basically a land cruiser Prado than any Land rover product. I don't the time or money that will be thrown at it to keep it on the road.

The range rover scores some of the lowest rating by it's owners I have ever seen.
