Ok 2006 Saturn Vue. 2.2L ecotec. 222k miles. Replaced the compressor, accumlator and expansion valve. New compressor not remanned. Put vacuum on the system, was still holding after 2 hours. Filled system with freon, correct amount, ran fine for couple hours blows cold, then started idle surging. Idle surging continued after AC cut off. Parked car for 30 mins. Started and drove fine without AC, then started surging again with AC off. Turned AC on and it quit. Ran fine for hour drive on or off. No surge. Went into a store to grab a drink. Came out started car, it kept stalling with AC off. Parked it for 15 mins. Started up ran fine for a few then started surging again. Im stumped.

if I keep rpms just below 1000 with gas oedal i get no surge. At 800rpm idle when surging starts after a couple times it will stall.

Well, there's two routes to this:

1. New is not the same as known good. Just because it's new doesn't mean that it functions properly. A significant number of aftermarket parts don't meet quality specifications. Perhaps the compressor has a short, or is miswired, or has a substandard diode,  for example.

2. If the part is confirmed as good, then retrace your steps on the replacement procedure. You should be able to find a factory manual, if you don't have one.

Good luck.

Know what ya mean there. I’ve dealt with this company before. Usually pretty good on quality control. I've seen their compressors out last the AC Delco ones they copied. I completely unplugged it after my initial post. Staeted surging with it unplugged and AC off after running for 5-10 mins. There is a sensor on the freon line right by the compressor, Im not sure what it does. Beyond basic gauge reading, evac flush and charge isn’t in my forte.

Could you have disturbed the idle control valve or its plumbing when you were doing the work?

I had to remove the air box from the intake plastic pipe. Air flow sensor is 1 1/2 feet down the line. Checked it and all plugs around throttle body. I know the ecm changes throttle info when AC is on. Gonna take it apart and clean throttle body in am,. Haven’t done that in awhile.

Anyone think the Cat could cause this? I know it’s been coming apart for some time. Occasionally small pieces of it shoot out the tailpipe. It’s been on the to do list but not high priority since it wasn’t causing issues.

UPDATE, thanks to everyone for their responses. Guess I knocked some dirt around when I took the air intake off. Cleaned the throttle body and sensors this morning. Running rock solid and AC is making my teeth chatter.
