I'm looking at a used car to buy, and I was wondering if their is a quick way to check if it had frequent oil changes and the engine has normal wear. What should I look for? By quick I mean something that takes less than an hour. (carfax records aren't always accurate or available.)
I have several friends that bought their cars brand new, and once the free oil change period ran out, sometimes they would skip out on oil changes for 15K+ miles. I don't want to get stuck with one of those cars.

You could try dry and wet compression tests on cylinders to find out about the engine health. You can also check the spark plugs condition.
