Is this a bad transmission issue? What do I need to do to fix it?

Hey Scotty, I bought a 2003 Toyota Avalon that has around 140k miles this past summer. It has been running fine until a few days ago. I was going up a hill and hit the gas pedal hard. After I got over the hill the rpm was going up really high when I was only going 20 mph. I then turned off the car and let it sit for 5 hours. When I got back in I let the car run for around 5 minutes. The second I put it into drive and started to drive through my neighborhood the rmp went up to 2 and the car was making a lot of noise out of the exhaust. I had a transmission issue on a 2017 mission Altima I bought and that did last more than three months. I was wondering what you thought the issue was and how much do you think it will cost to fix it. I’m a senior in high school and want this car to last long.

Is transmission fluid full? What is its condition? Did you have the car checked out by a mechanic before you bought it?

It could be anything from low fluid (possible leak) to the transmission needing replacement. Further diagnosis is needed.

You're starting out with a 23-year-old car. How much longer do you realistically expect to get out of it?
