Jettas do NOT last. Now if you had to buy a VW, this would probably be it. Manual transmission, 1 owner, with low miles. If you could get it a lot cheaper like $3000 and a mechanic says its in good shape it might last a good few years. Keep in mind VWs especially in the United States aren't made well.

For $5000, you could get yourself a 2003-2010 Toyota Corolla with an automatic which would last 2-3 times as long as the Jetta, even if it has more miles now. 

No matter what you buy, make sure to have a mechanic check it out to make sure its in good shape.

Endless moneypit

It is a manual which Volkswagen are good with. They don't last very long in terms of other parts of the car like the electronics around 100,000 miles.  I would asked for at least $2000 max. They aren't worth much even with manuals. This car is usually for people who wants to drive manuals for fun.

Pass on that one. Stay away from anything VW.
