It's 4,000 miles, time for an oil change but!

Hello everyone,

I have an 08 Lexus GS350 AWD currently at the 4000 oil change interval. It has the Scotty recommended-Baxter adapter using a Mobil1 M1- 204A oil filter can-rated at "20,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first" advertised guarantee. I drained the old oil from the GS350 (it was very dark) but before I put in new oil, should I also change that Mobil 1 oil filter can or leave it on for the next oil change?

Please help,

Mike B.

P.S. It's tough as adamantium cookies to get that oil can off!

Ignore the 20K mile "guarantee", just change the filter.

@chucktobias Thank you!

Never trust those "guarantees" and change it every time you change the oil, its better for the oil and your engine to have high-quality oil running though a high-quality clean filter

@david-n Thank you!

That's normal. Oil blackens because there's combustion happening and residual gases get into the oil. The engine oil, piston rings, and cylinder walls don't form perfect seals, either. Blow-by gets past the piston rings and gets into the oil. The PCV valve takes the blow-by and recirculates it back to the engine to be burned.

What's cheaper? Skimping on oil filters, or buying another engine when yours goes out because you didn't change the filter frequently enough? Change the oil and filter every time you change the oil. Oil and filters are cheap, engines are expensive, as Scotty says. I get my filters at Walmart, and Motorcraft filters are cheaper than a quart of oil.

@justin-shepherd I also got my filter at Walmart! lol I'll change it, thank you!

Changing your oil but not your filter is like  changing your pants but not your underwear. Change it every oil change, then you don’t have to worry about remembering whether you did the filter last time or not

@bobthehatking Thank you! Awesome simile, I see how that is true!
