Hey scotty, I have a 1991 Dodge Power Ram. It has a 318 V8 with a 4 speed manual transmission. Whenever I drive in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, it makes a growl/whirl noise. It does not make the noise in 4th or neutral. The noise seems slighty quiter in 3rd than in 1st and 2nd, but you can definitly still hear it. I think it does not do it in 4th because 4th is a "direct drive" gear but I don't know why it is making the noise in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Thanks.

I wanted to suggest to check the transmission with a high level scan but the car is too old to have OBDII port. Could you pinpoint the noise to see if it comes from tranny or not?
