That really depends on the mechanic. For example when we go to our trusted mechanic for a full inspection he charges his hourly rate so we usually pay for an hour as it doesn't take any longer than that. His rate is about $100 an hour or so.

Can you ask your mechanic to come along with you? You pay him for his time but that's what I did one time for a specific used car I wanted and was 2 hours drive from my place. There are these companies that offer pre purchase inspections but I don't have any experience with them so hopefully someone else can chime in on this.
