Where they are fun to drive but of course they aren't cheap if you can afford one new that's not a bad idea if you want that type of vehicle.

The XV is sold in the states as the Crosstrek. It has been extensively discussed here. Just click on the search icon above and search for "Crosstrek".
In summary, it has a 2.0L horizontally-opposed ("boxer") engine (FB20) that is very reliable, but slow and a little noisy. The Lineartronic CVT has had issues in the past but is fine now as long as you don't tow anything heavy with it. The cabin is not luxurious but very spacious and functional. Overall it is extremely easy to work on (an amateur mechanic can do just about anything on it except transmission service) and has low long-term cost of ownership.
It's very popular for a reason. In the US, supplies are very low. But if you can get one, it can be a good vehicle.
