Muffled, Dull Rattle at 1200rpm

I have a 2016 FWD ST Pathfinder, 3.5L Petrol, CVT, 130,000km on ODO.

About 12 months ago my car started making a muffled, dull rattle type of noise at around the 1200rpm mark. It sounds like it is coming from under the centre of the car somewhere.

  • Rattle only happens when in a forward gear. It does not occur when revving in park or in neutral.
  • Rattle only occurs in the range of 1100 - 1300rpm (switching to SPORT MODE increases revs and noise goes away).
  • I have had exhaust pressure tested for leaks, and heat shields checked for loose or rattling bits. Nothing found.

My uncle recently bought a 2nd hand 2016 Pathfinder identical to mine and his car does the exact same thing.

It does not seem to be affecting the performance of the car, it is just really ANNOYING and ruins the quiet and smooth Nissan driving experience I am used to.

get underneath and follow the sound. probably a loose heat shield or exhaust

Often it's the catalytic converter rattling. But to find it out, watch my video finding the source of car noises Scotty. It's on YouTube and you can find the source of any noise. That way you want to pray it's not the transmission itself cuz that gets expensive when it finally breaks
