Hey Scotty I got a 2009 Nissan Altima 3.5 coupe and can’t get it to start, It does nothing when I press on the break and push the start button but no sound or anything happens , what’s the problem?:/ I think it might be something called steering gear box
Have you checked the battery to make sure it is good?

If that's the case, it's an Altima...the altimeter needs reset 🤪

The first thing I would check is the battery and make sure it has enough charge- around 12.2V. The second thing I would check is the electronic steering lock like you suggested. I had this problem with my 09 Altima the other day, when I would press on the pedal and push the start button, it would stay in “Lock” position and fail to go to “ACC” mode or even “ON”. If this is the case, it is most likely your electronic steering lock. What I did with mine was remove the box under the dash, break it open with a hammer and screw driver without damaging anything inside, and rewind the plastic gear turned by the motor allowing the metal button to be popped out again. I removed the spring and black plastic piece inside the box which provided a temporary fix, but eventually the tiny motor stopped working from time to time and I just disabled the whole system all together. Lastly I put it back in the car and hooked it up just so I could get the car working again, let it run, and then lifted the hood and popped open the fuse box to remove the fuse for the steering lock thus eliminating the problem all together- NOT requiring you to spend any money at all. Nissan did a service campaign for this problem extending as far to their top of the line cars including the GT-R for some period of time, but if your car is out of the warranty period you are out of luck for a free fix. Nissan wanted $600, I said f*** no and fixed it myself. That amount of money for a common problem for a part that was built to fail is ridiculous and one of the reasons why I won’t be buying a Nissan again. If you do decide to try my fix above which can be found on YouTube, remember that once you disable the steering lock your steering wheel is no longer locked and can be turned when the car is off, so make sure you take the proper measures when parking on a hill and etc. Hope this helps.
