Heyo Scotty! I got a Honda Civic DX 2006 Manual and was wondering if my VTEC (I-Vtec) was activating or not. Not really sure since I don't hear or feel anything when I hit that supposed 4000 to 6000 rpm mark where it should activate. Oh and I think my Engine is SOHC. Congratz on moving and Big Hello from Canada!
they are very complex systems but also very well built you should not feel anything other than you have good acceleration if you always have good acceleration the system is working Honda designed it to be pretty seamless
We check it on our dyno, monitoring the solenoid operation while going through the rpm range.
Yes, it can be expensive to get it checked at a dealership, but I wouldn't trust a "shade-tree" mechanic.
Our mechanic says he can just "hear" the changes, but I have trouble with all but the aggressive lobe models.
I presume it would be possible to simply increase engine speed in a driveway and monitor ECU operation of the solenoid, but be careful because the actuation speed is pretty high and it's easy of over-rev the engine.
However, because we run all of our cars on the dyno before sale anyway, we just do it there.
True. It's pretty seamless in a Honda.
Fiat's are more noticeable. They clunk, and smoke billows out the tail pipe.
