Hi guys, what is wrong with my car if I can change the gear from N to R without pressing the release button? A Rn6 Honda stream by the way.

Thanks much

I think you are not supposed to do that. It may potentially damage your transmission.

Yaser is right. Some cars will allow you to perform that action but you do not want to do it.

It falls under the "just because you can, doesnt mean you should" line of thinking.

@mod_man
To me it looks like his question wasn't "should I do it". He's asking "what's wrong with my car". In other words "how do I fix this"?

No cars should allow this. In fact I think it's a safety law. Otherwise a lot of shifters would be getting bumped and people would be getting run over.

Yeah I misread. I thought it was D to N. My mistake.

It's definitely not normal, the button mechanism is bad, get it fixed ASAP. They were never made that way !

Thanks all for the reply. My apologies for the late reply.

I been pressing the release button to change the gear from N to R, except for one time where I think I had unintentionally shifted the gear to R without pressing the button. I have tried shifting from R to P and it works (i.e requires me to press the release button).

Hopefully it's not something extremely serious like gearbox or transmission issue. Will get it sorted out as soon as possible.
