Do you think I shall get the Nissan versa with a manual transmission instead of Nissan's bad unreliable jatco CVTs?

Nissan manual transmissions are fine. They suck at CVT and FWD & FWD-based AWD conventional automatic. So definitely get a manual if you’re getting a Versa. Do some research though and make sure that engine doesn’t have history of problems though because I believe some recent Nissans have had engine problems as well.
Also be aware that a Versa is a tiny little car with a tiny engine. If you’re ok with its size and low power, then go for it and you’ll get great gas mileage.
