I am looking at buying a Mazda 3. Used ones in my area are going for $23-24k with around 10-20k miles on them. New are $25-27k. Is it worth spending that extra bit to know the vehicles service history? Many of the Carfax reports on the used listings show only 1 or 2 oil changes in the that mileage which worries me.

How do you know there weren't oil changes that were not reported to Carfax? You can't really count on that service for a whole lot. The car could have been wrecked of flooded then put back together in someone's backyard and Carfax would not know anything about it. You need a good mechanic to thoroughly examine any used car before purchase to determine its true condition.
In any event it looks like you can get a new one for not all that much more than used. If you are financing some of the difference would likely be made up in the lower interest rates on new car loans versus used car loans.
