I've got an 04 ford explorer auto trans, all wheel drive with 165xxx on it. Recently I lost reverse with no warning at all. Fluid looks and smells good. I found that if I put it in 4 low reverse works but it's not 100%.. What would cause this to happen? Any suggestions as what to look for or what it may be is greatly appreciated
Sounds like your transmission is about to go out, I had the same problem with my ‘04 Ford Explorer 4L, 4WD, had to rev the engine up to get it to go in gear. Drove it like that for about a year until the transmission went completely out and I got it rebuilt.

Likely component given conditions is reverse solenoid. Should be some ohm checks in the service manual.
