Odd noise in reverse gear after replacing clutch

  • Hey Scotty, I have a 2008 Mustang V6 Manual that I bought at 53k miles in seemingly excellent condition mechanically and cosmetically. A few days after buying it, I started to notice what I now know was the smell of a burning clutch. My guess is whoever owned it before drove it really hard (or poorly) and managed to destroy the original clutch, so I bought a new kit (flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disk, pilot bearing and slave cylinder) and replaced it (painstakingly) over the next couple days. After letting it break in, everything runs better than before but whenever I have the reverse gear fully engaged and moving, there’s this odd noise that almost sounds like an electric drill slowly turning, it sounds like it’s coming from the back towards the driveshaft and not the transmission. The reverse gear seems completely fine, it doesn’t slip or anything, just this odd friction noise. Any ideas what’s going on? Did I install something wrong? Should I be concerned?

Well, the first thing you want to do is pinpoint the noise . Watch my video finding the source of car noises. Scotty. You use the device like that defying exactly with the noise is coming from then you can find out. Is it something in the rear end? Is it something in the drive shaft or is it internal to the transmission. Pray it's not internal till the transmission because that would mean reverse gear starting to wear out

I would take a closer look at the u-joints and rear axle
