How can I know if a car is an oil burner before I buy it?

Check the spark plugs and tailpipe.

Bluish smoke coming from the exhaust pipe(s).

checking the dipstick is a good start
the oil level is at the full mark, and is clean because of a recent oil change, so I still don't know if it burns oil

My car burns oil (1q/500miles), and the tailpipe has some carbon, with P0420 code, so you can check those things, especially if the code is recently cleared
