In a car that burns oil (say, half a quart every 3000 miles), what prolonged steps can you take in terms of maintenance to ensure that the amount of oil the car burns stays minimal/does not increase.

Change the oil regularly with quality oil of the viscosity recommended by the manufacturer, check the oil so it never gets too low. That's not too hard, but it's about the only thing that will work short of an engine rebuild. The "miracle" additives don't work worth sh**.

IF you really want to OCD, do a  compression test, record the results and you can know exactly how worn your engine is getting, year by year.
