I have an ‘04 Ford Explorer 4L 176k miles. I just watched a video of @the motoroilgeek and he says you should always pre fill your oil filter with oil when changing your engine oil and I’ve been changing my own oil for years and have never pre filled my oil filter. Is it really necessary? Thanks.
Is it really necessary?According to the test Lake conducted, prefilling the oil filter enables an engine to build up oil pressure more quickly which reduces wear. You're changing your own oil so there's no reason to not prefill.
it takes an extra 5 seconds. Why the heck not.
@imperator I was asking if it was necessary.
What do you mean when you say "necessary"?
Strictly speaking, it isn't necessary to change your engine oil. The engine just won't last very long.
Preventing wear on the engine parts to make it last longer by spending a few extra seconds to fill the oil filter is worth it in my opinion.
@imperator I was asking if it was necessary.
Is it a best practice, yes. Is it "absolutely necessary", no.
