[Solved] Oil for 2017 Golf

Hi Scotty - own a 2017 Golf.  Admittedly, bought it before following you.  Base 1.8 litre engine with 170hp.  50,000 kilometres.  Recommended oils include synthetic 5W-40 and 5W-30.  Should I be switching to the new synthetic 0W-16?  And if not, what's your recommended oil for this engine?

Love your channel and what you're doing.  And congratulations on the new residence!  Many thanks!

I highly recommend using the Volkswagen recommended fully synthetic 5w-30/40 on that engine. The new 0w-16 recommendation is strictly for better fuel economy. That is a very light oil, and I personally would not use it if you want your engine to last a long time. I have a bmw, and they recently switched over to 0w-20/30. I continue to use 5w-30 for better lubrication at hot temperatures AND cold temperatures. Realize that our small turbocharged engines get very hot and will thin out the oil quickly, which is why you want some weight to the oil.

If you use OW-16 you will RUIN your engine. That oil is not for this engine. Don't deviate from the recommended viscosities. OW-16 (Just because its new) doesn't mean it can be used with engines that don't call for it.
