My check engine light came on and the code said misfire on spark plug 3. I bought four new spark plugs and when we went to replace them there was some oil on the spark plugs. We also noticed the oil level was over full. We had just had an oil change. If this was caused by over full oil. Can we just drain the extra oil out and replace the spark plugs or what would you recommend. I live far from town. So I would have to drive to get new parts. Would it be safe to drive temporarily. I don’t want to ruin my engine. It is a 2000 Subaru Outback. Thank you for you time
Bear in mind those engines are very prone to head gasket failure and at over 20 years old worn rings are certainly a possibility. As a first pass at the problem you could try getting the oil back to its proper level and cleaning or replacing the plugs and keep an eye on it. If it's burning oil you can certainly drive it but you'd want to keep an eye on the oil level.
