can I use an oil filter that's too big

What happens if you get an oil filter that’s too big? Could that cause engine noise?

Yes. You need to use the correct filter. Otherwise they would make the same filter for all cars.

You mean an oil filter that is a bit longer, but it has the same size flange and a thread as the one that would not be bigger? Probably nothing, other than your oil capacity would be a bit larger, … and the space required to spin it on and off is sufficient enough.

For example, on my olden 320i BMW, I had a difficulty finding a spec oil filter locally, so I just used a longer filter for a VW that was readily available and cheap. It all worked just swimmingly for more than 25 years!
