Oil won't drain past valve cover.

Hello,

We've got a 1999 Saturn SL2 sedan with the DOHC engine (129000 miles) and we recently had the idle pulley bearing seize causing the serpentine belt to slip off while driving. My mother (who owns the car and was driving at the time), drove the car back about half a mile to our house. We replaced the pulley and the engine ran fine but there was a loud squealing that seemed to be coming from the power steering pump. Upon further inspection the pump's pulley did slide in and out leading us to believe that it was worn. Before focusing on that problem we decided to check the oil after letting it sit and noticed it was about a half a quart low, so we began to pour in that amount. To our surprise we had barely poured a quarter of a quart before the oil fill hole filled with oil. Strange behavior we thought, but we figured we would give it some time to drain down. After 15 minutes of waiting we noticed it had gone down very little and became concerned. We did research online and figured it might be draining back because of the oil filter so we changed it and the valve cover gasket to look at the baffle and only noticed layers of carbon buildup so we did an oil change and tried to fill it up, same problem. Overnight night it at least drained below the fill hole and the PCv valve. My question is, what are our options? We need the car, so what should we do to fix this problem with the oil?

Thanks in advance.

layers of carbon buildup

the holes draining down into the crankcase must be plugged up. Not good.

Try an oil system cleaner.
