2001 Mustang V6 3.8LT 235K [Automatic]
Doing a lot of experimenting at the end of the month once I get my hands on a floor jack that isn't trying to turn me into a pancake. 🥞
Pa is suggesting a GlassPack while we're talking about what I'm gonna do.
Opinions on GlassPacks from those who've tried it?
Are there better alternatives or ideas to choosing that?
First straight pipe of my life. Would a straight straight pipe be even better than one with a GP?
Thank you guys, much love always 💕 🏎
Forget this Cat for real! I've had P0420 7+ years lmao. It's gonna become a mini lawn ornanent (incase I need her. One guy says WV doesn't care, then another says they do. I'll read up on it by the time it matters. If only I lived in Tennessee. )
The only glasspack muffler I ever used was installed on a 1970 Subaru with a 2-cylinder, 2-stroke engine. It worked fine in that application in place of the rusted-out stock muffler, but probably has no bearing on what you'd experience in a more conventional vehicle.

Never rely on a jack to hold up a car while you get under it. Use jackstands or ramps.

West Virginia requires safety inspections every two years but apparently no emissions inspection:
https://transportation.wv.gov/DMV/Vehicle-Services/Pages/Vehicle-Inspection.aspx
https://www.kbb.com/car-advice/vehicle-inspections-by-state/#west-virginia
You would want to verify this with your DMV.
@chucktobias Yeah I'm gonna pick up a pair of jackstands along with the big jack coming up. (Very tempted to go full Appalachia and use my unusual collection of cinderblocks I have for no reason anymore. Maybe I can build a cinderblock car to surpass Toyota.)
I was laying here reading WV code. Went to over three "legal" looking sites that tried to tell me TN/WV required Emissions testing even though I knew it wasn't true. Thank you for the links, I was just getting bad ones.
It was saying straight pippin is illegal in EVERY state too. Which makes no sense cause so many roll around here right in front of the police, loud as F22s. Guess these sites just feel the need to disuade people.
Cinder blocks are no good, they can crumble under the weight of a car. If you want to roll your own you can make ramps out of wood planks. You can probably find plans on youtube.
@chucktobias Used to have really sturdy metal ramps but when friends ask to borrow they mean for forever.
I'll look into those on YT that sounds cool, thank ya
Many claims about an increase in horsepower (decrease in the exhaust's back pressure) turn out to be false. Using one can often make little or no difference in horsepower. I had a glasspack on a car when I was 16 years old and thought it sounded cool. But the people who had to listen to my car's increased noise on a daily basis didn't think so, they thought the loud sound was in fact, annoying. In hindsight, it was.
Opinions On GlassPacks
@hixster That's pretty cool. I just wanna know how loud it is. She's already got a lil unique noise (hopefully it's just her personality). Used to compare my 2001 with my buddy's 2004 and they'd always ask "why does mine sound like that??"
Not tryna drive the neighbors nuts (that one though 👀), I'm just curious about trying it out for fun. Thank you 😊
@hixster When I installed the glasspack on that old Subaru it wasn't for increased performance (there's only so much you can get out of a 360cc engine) or even sound. It just happened to fit perfectly in place of the unobtainium stock muffler that had rotted away. It really didn't make much more noise since there was a resonator in the exhaust system ahead of the muffler that also provided the back pressure needed by the 2-stroke engine. Fun times!
@softesteevee @chucktobias I installed a https://cherrybomb.com/ on a Triumph TR-250, which was straight six. Yeah it was less expensive but when you got on the gas, you could hear Cherry sing. lol
@hixster @chucktobias That's super chill, both of what ya'll said. I bet it was super fun. If everything goes good in a week or two maybe I'll find out what it's like. My Pa was always straight pippin or glasspackin his 60s Mustangs, Falcons and all the others. Definitely why he wants me to Glasspack it lol I love him so much ❤️
