Overdrive

Hi Scotty. I have a 2003 100th anniversary of Ford Mustang GT convertible SOHC with over 227,000 miles and ever since I bought it (2019) I have driven it in overdrive. Does that ruin an engine? I have heard people say it's not good to do that. I need your expert opinion. Thanks.

  • Thanks MountainManJoe. There are people that just guess at what is good for cars that aren't experts. They actually have no answer other than it's not good. I appreciate your response.

Does [driving in overdrive] ruin an engine?

No it does not. You have 227,000 miles that prove it.

The 'D' position is the correct gear selection for all automatic vehicles. Unless you are towing or descending steep hills.

This should all be explained in your owner's manual. If was bad to use it, it wouldn't be the normal driving selection.

I have heard people say it's not good to do that

why? And how do those people suggest that you drive?

The manufacturer is the expert on your vehicle, and they say you should use it.
