Hey scotty I have a 1993 toyota 4 runner 2.4lt 4wd manual transmission. And recently I have this issues popping out of 1st gear on take off , so i checked the fluid and topped it off. I replaced the shifter bushing. And it's still kicking out of first gear, not all the time but most of the time and I'm planning on going out, but i don't want to destroy my trans, is this a clutch issue ? That's the only thing i haven't touched and my uncle said he replaced it 10yrs ago ? What do you think? Please let me know.
This is the classic symptom of a worn out synchronizer. The reason it pops out of gear is that it's not going all the way into gear in the first place. The only way to fix it is have the transmission rebuilt.
Use the 2nd gear to take off, otherwise as @Doc said, you need to rebuild the transmission.
