We have a 2016 Toyota Highlander with a power rear liftgate. It has about 77700 trouble free miles. Just recently it has begun making a groaning noise when the liftgate is opened. We don’t know if we are able to add some wd-40 to the struts or have them replaced at the dealership.

Could be bushings, gear, anything. But they do need be lubed occasionally, I would get some white lithium spray grease. WD40 will quiet it temporarily, but in situations where grease is needed, all penetrating lubricants do is just dilute and make the grease run off, eventually making the issue worse.
